How Have the Internet and Technology Made Our Lives Better?

I want to hear how you think the internet and technology have made our lives and the world better. Let me know in comments or share with your ideas. How Have the Internet and Technology Made Our Lives Better?

Every once and a while I like to take a look at how the world has changed through technology as well as think about how it has made our lives better. This year the exercise seems to be more relevant than ever. With the backlash Facebook, Google and other tech companies are getting, as well as looming GDPR enforcement date (May 25, 2018), it may seem like technology is something bad.

With great power comes great responsibility

It’s true tech and data companies have become very powerful. Some people say too powerful. They know more then ever about us and this data is so easily distributed. So we must always be conscious that all the great things we are creating can also be used in bad ways. It would be irresponsible for companies, as well as individuals, to ignore the bad side of the equation.

I’m not here to solve those challenges. I think to keep us from slipping into “Techno Panic” mode (Thanks to @JeffJarvis for the quote), it is also a good time to think about how the internet and technology have made the world and our lives better.

The last time I wrote a post about this was in 2010. How the Internet Makes our Lives Better. I first asked people via Twitter and Facebook the following question, “In what ordinary ways has the internet simplified life?”  I received some great answers”

“I use the internet to find locations and people. This makes getting to who & where easier.” -@OttomatedSuccess (Melissa Otto)

“It has made finding information, both useful and useless, extremely easy. discovering music, events, people, etc takes seconds.” -@AdamChlan

“Living in a rural area it is great for shopping and banking.” -Charles Coe

Fast forward back to 2018 and three examples of how things are better today:

  1. Communication: My son is able to communicate and have a relationship with his grandparents across an ocean.
  2. Work: There are now companies where all their workers are remote. They don’t need to be in the same building let alone the same continent. This opens up workers many more job opportunities and companies all new talent pools.
  3. Entertainment: Most of us walking around with a device in our pocket that connects us to endless forms of entertainment: Music, TV shows, Movies, Podcasts… I could go on and on.

Now it’s your turn please comment below or share on social media with your favorite ways technology and the internet have improved your live and made the world a better place.

I’m looking forward to your responses!

Follow Up To “Resist Putting Your Digital Ads on Cruise Control”

This is a follow up to my previous post “Resist Putting Your Digital Ads on Cruise Control” about the Volkswagen Ad that was out of date.

If you remember the copy on the ad was

“It says you’ve arrived. Ahead of schedule.”

But the date was 2017.

Guess what! They updated it and I saw the new ad today. They didn’t even get a “thank you.”   Lol

It says you’ve arrived. Ahead of schedule. VW Jetta 2018

Being a Solution Provider and Building Relationships

Last Thursday we took a trip to Middletown Connecticut to do a photo-shoot for one of our newest clients: A.R. Mazzotta. It was a lot of fun and great opportunity to spend time with the A.R. Mazzotta staff.

A.R. Mazzotta Logo - A Connecticut Staffing AgencyA.R. Mazzotta Employment Specialists is a staffing company that serves the state of Connecticut. They contracted us to develop their new website as well has to partner with them for their Digital Marketing. In the past few weeks we formulated the plan for new site and also started development.

Of course one thing every new website needs is quality images and photography. The President at ARM, Laura is fundamentally against using stock photos. You know, the photos that you can buy online that hundreds, maybe thousands of other companies are using. So, she wanted to use real photos of the company staff and employees.

One thing we always incorporate in our projects is a weekly status call. So while working on the planning stages of the website, I really started to get to know Laura’s and her company’s personalities. In this time I watched Laura go through two local professional photographers, without getting the quality of photos that she really wanted. Instead of just sitting and waiting until she found the right photographer or trying to push her to use stock photos, I decided to be proactive and take action.

Thinking outside the box to solve a client’s hard to resolve problem goes a looong way.

We don’t have an in house photographer, so I reached out to a photographer in our area: Matthew Lester. He travels around the country doing corporate photography. His niche is really recruiting material for universities. Recruiting for universities… a staffing company… I’ve seen a bunch of his work through social media and his site and I was sure he would be a good fit for ARM. One of the selling points besides the quality of his photos, is he also uses a special tool that syncs his camera to an iPad as he shoots. So we can see what the pictures look like as they are taken. This is something I think all photographers should use. No waiting, you can tell if the shots are working or not, right away. This excited Laura!

So we set everything up and headed to CT for the shoot. And guess what.. it went REALLY well! We managed to get all the shots we wanted and more. The client was at ease because they saw how good they were right away. Now with so many good shots, the hard part is choosing which ones should go on the site! I Can’t wait to see the finished product when the site launches.

“I really appreciate that you are solution driven. A perfect example is the photo dilemma.” Laura Pedersen – A.R. Mazzotta

This experience is not new for us and it embodies the philosophy of Blackbird e-Solutions. Thinking outside the box to solve a client’s hard to resolve problem goes a looong way. Even though we don’t typically do photography, being a solution is much, much better than waiting and letting the client get frustrated. After all sales and successful businesses are about building relationships. Not taking orders and dispensing a product.

Check out some “behind the scenes” pictures or our photo-shoot on Google+ or Facebook.

~~~ Just a disclaimer these are photos of Matt (Taken with a Samsung S4 phone), not by Matt. So don’t judge Matt’s skill by these photos. You can blame me. Haha ~~~
10 Reasons You Might Be Penalized by Google
In the last few years Google has made more significant changes in it’s algorithm than ever before. It’s enough to make your head spin. If you feel like you have been punished by any of these updates, the first step is to determine exactly which guideline(s) you’ve violated.
Hummingbirds and Penguins and Pandas oh my!
google algorithm udates penguin  panda hummingbird
Google actually makes it easy for us. They’ve given us a list of 10 key elements that they may list as the reasons for your warning and ultimately why you’ve been punished. Each of these can be considered as a direct violation of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines:
Unnatural links to your site – impacts links:
Google has found unnatural or deceptive links pointing to your site. This impacts specific links only.  Just remember not every referral is a good referral.
Unnatural links to your site:
Google has found unnatural or deceptive links pointing to your site. Impacts your entire site. If shady sites are linking to you, you’ll be shady by association.
Hacked site:
Google has found malicious content and suspects your site has been hacked by a third party. Impacts your entire site. Don’t worry if you don’t keep up with the security of your site, Google will take care of it for you… by not sending anyone to your site!
User-generated spam:
Spammy links have been found within blog or forum comments or profiles. This may be created by users of your site, but you’ll be punished just the same.
Spammy freehosts:
When a majority of a site is considered spammy, the entire site or ‘service’ may be deemed spam and receive manual action. This can be equated to the old saying, “you’re only as good as the company you keep.”
Thin content with little or no added value:
Google has detected shallow pages such as automatically generated content, scraped content or doorway pages. Nobody likes the middle man, if you’re copying content from other sites or using small amounts of content to then send visitors somewhere else., you’ll be punished.
Cloaking and/or spammy redirects:
Google has found that you’re showing one page to users and another to the search engines, or redirecting visitors to a page other than the one shown to Google. If you’re doing this, Google will start cloaking you from their search results, and you won’t be found again.
Unnatural links from your site:
Google has found unnatural or manipulative outbound links on your site. Guess what this will get you… you’ll naturally be thrown out of Google’s search results.
Pure spam:
Google has found that your site uses “aggressive spam techniques” like cloaking or scraping, or is guilty of other “egregious” violations. No fancy mustard will save this spam sandwich, you’ll be thrown out with the garbage.
Hidden text and/or keyword stuffing:
Google has found text that’s hidden from users but not search engines, and/or multiple keywords on a page, for the purposes of manipulating your rankings. Yep you guessed it. Hiding keywords will get you hidden from search results and the game will be over.
So the lesson is, Google wants us to have great sites and lots of traffic, all we have to do is make sure we listen.
