Is America’s Youth Globally Savvy?

At Blackbird e-Solutions we work in an international market and the business is built on a passion for internationalism. As the world gets small through technological advances, we have the opportunity to experience many things we could not have in the past. We believe there is much to be gained from a global perspective.

I recently came across a post by Jennifer Kushell co-founder and president of YSN.com (Your Success Network) and felt I wanted to share it. You can read the full article on the Huffington Post site: Globally Savvy… Young Americans Are Not. You can read my response below.

————————————————–

After studying, living and working abroad for a number of years. I think there is a lot of truth in what Jen says. To address some of the comments: I don’t think that she is necessarily blaming the youth in the USA, rather challenging them, throwing down the gauntlet if you will. The state of our country comes from the society as a whole, the point is the next generation has the power to be a driving force in the future. They just need to step up and take responsibility.

One of the worst things that I have seen in the last decade is an increase in an isolationist attitude. A great is example of this goes back to when I was in college. I remember sitting at lunch in the University cafeteria and reading the USAToday. Arguably not the greatest newspaper in the world, but it was the only one that you could get in the area that covered international news. The guy that I was eating with saw that I was reading the international news so he asked, “Why are you reading that?” I answered, “Because I like to know what is going on in the rest of the world.” His reply, “Why? You’re not there.” I was shocked. This attitude of the rest of the world is inconsequential and we need not be concerned with it is very dangerous. Now, I don’t know if people who take this view do it out of ignorance or arrogance, but the fact is we are not in this world alone. If we don’t pay attention to what other countries and other people are doing we risk the chance of being left behind. We can learn a lot from other cultures. We don’t have to like everything they do, nor do we have to change to be like them. But, learning from diversity can have amazing results. Seeing that there are other perspectives out there can open your mind to solutions you never would have discovered otherwise. That, can only be a good thing.

Something that I believe can combat against the isolationistic attitude is if every student studied abroad. This would give them the chance to see another country/culture and expose them to new ideas and perspectives. It doesn’t have to be something drastic either, an exchange in England or Australia where you don’t even have to learn new language, or even our close neighbor Canada. Just getting slightly out of your comfort zone and pushing your own boundaries will make you a stronger person. It is amazing how exciting and eye opening even just a semester or a year abroad can be. Plus, if you don’t like it, you can go back home after your time is up.

Though, I would be willing to bet that the experience will make you see things in a different light.

Is Page Rank Really Dead?!?

At PubCon 2008 during his Top-Shelf SEO session Bruce Clay discussed the future of SEO.

In the video below Bruce Clay makes some startling predictions about how ranking will not be the major indicator of good SEO in the near future. As he says, “Rank is dead“Some of the main factors causing the changes are personalized search, behavior-based search, intent-based search, and universal search. These various types of searches are attempts to get into the users head and make search better for each individual. What does this mean? It means that group of people searching from their personal computers can get very different results based on their search and online history.

How does this affect SEO professionals? You will no longer be able to focus on ranking alone. Rank is no longer king, real traffic is the true test. The key is to use analytics to measure traffic, online conversions, bounce rates and other visitor trends. Furthermore, using various types of media such as audio, video, images, etc. This will not only make your site more interesting for your visitors, but the Google spiders will like it more too.

Localize and Improve Your Sales

Through my experience working for US companies in German and German companies in the US, I’ve found that many companies believe that they can do everything in house in their native country. When operating in a foreign market there are many things that you need to consider that a non native most likely will not recognize or understand. This is largely a language issue but can also include other areas of business as well.

This is called Localization: The act of giving a product a local look and feel. Making customers believe it is native to their market.

For example; when sending out marketing material you have a very short amount of time to get the readers attention. If it is not concisely written in the target markets language you don’t have a chance.

Another issue with marketing is that different countries/regions view marketing in different ways. Something that gets a lot of attention and works well one place may not work well in another or even have legal implications.

First impressions are very important and if the reader doesn’t understand the message because of poor language, they are not going to believe that you can provide them with a superior product. Your brochure ends up in the trash. This is a huge issue because you have lost a potential client before they even know anything about your product.

Furthermore, many companies don’t localize things such as software, websites or manuals. I’m sure most of us have gone through the frustration of trying to assemble or configure a new product and not been able to understand the instructions. If you had the choice between two essentially equal products, but one of them had a manual or instructions that you could clearly understand because it was written by a native speaker… which would you choose to buy?

I’m always surprised to see how many international companies use non-native speakers to translate their materials for foreign markets. Whether it is out of ignorance, arrogance or for cost reasons, in the long run having your products localized for each market where the company operates is extremely important. Simply doing this can drastically improve you marketing success, sales volume and retention of clients!

2008 Election Was a Chance for Social Media To Shine

Now that the election is over we are all suffering from the the hangover of the last months. Things were certainly tense and last night Barack Obama won with a landslide of electoral votes, becoming the 44th president of the United States.

Obama was not the only winner in this election though. Social Media was also a winner. This election was a sort of coming of age for the budding technology sector. Voters used blogs, social networks, photo, instant messaging and video sharing sites to discuss candidates, to get people out to vote, to help spread the word about the candidates and to share their experiences about the whole process. On the right side of the page you can see what’s hot on Twitter, a free social networking and micro-blogging service.

The candidates also harnessed social media tools to promote themselves. I was surprised to even see Obama’s ads on Hulu.com, a website that offers free, ad-supported streaming video of TV shows and movies from NBC, FOX and many other networks and studios. Hulu

There’s a good article on Business Week that talks about all the different ways Social Media was used for the election: The Vote: A Victory for Social Media, Too

The election showed the power of Social Media and it looks like it is hear to stay.

Search Engine Optimization a Continuing Success for TriStarr Staffing

This past January we procured a new SEO client, TriStarr Staffing. They were planning to build a new website and they contract us to do the SEO for the site. We worked with the web design firm Haley Marketing Group and the project was delivered in June. Then in September we received confirmation that the SEO efforts helped them win clients:

“We went out to visit a new client yesterday and asked how he heard about TriStarr. He said he googled staffing services. We came up third - thanks Bryan” — Scott Fiore VP, Partner TriStarr Staffing

After showing the power of Website Analytics, Blackbird e-Solutions was contracted for a year of SEO Maintenance and Support Services. TriStarr was particularly interested in tracking the path (ie. keywords, landing pages, pages visited) that visitors are following to get to their application forms and how many people completing applications compared to how many viewed them. This is a very important conversion for a staffing agency. They were also interested in tracking referrals that they have paid for from other services/websites.

The optimization efforts are still paying off. Below are a few links showing the search result placements for keywords that TriStarr is targeting:

Old School Marketing Just Does Not Get It

This is a great video that shows how traditional marketing just doesn’t work anymore. Talking at customers doesn’t work anymore, you have to engage them if you want to keep their interest.
