HootSuite is an online dashboard that allows people manage multiple social media accounts as well as work with teams. When working with a team you can do such things as assign tweets to your team members, so the right person is replying. Among other things you can also schedule tweets, bulk schedule and upload files through the HootSuite platform.

Yesterday the company announced that after running beta testing it was going to allow all users, regardless of their account type, to manage their Google+ pages.

Woohoo, or should we say Hoot Hoot to HootSuite for listening to their users and giving them the functionality they wanted.

Now how do you add your Google+ Page to Your HootSuite Dashboard?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

It’s simple: Make sure you’re logged into your Google+ account. Then click on the owl icon on the top of the toolbar on the left side to access your profile. Then click on the Add A Social Network under My Social Networks. Click Connect with Google+ and Allow HootSuite to access your Google account. Then choose the pages you want to connect. That’s it, you’re done!

How to Schedule Bulk Twitter & Facebook Posts with Hootsuite

I’m definitely not a believer in bots, or that you should solely use a scheduler for your Twitter or Facebook profile, because after all it’s about engaging not spitting out automated updates. However, sometimes automation is a great thing.

I run a website for soccer enthusiasts in Central Pennsylvania called CentralPASoccer.com and every week we there are pickup soccer matches that we want to remind people about via Twitter and Facebook. Originally we were creating a separate post each day there was pickup. Now, with Hootsuite I set up a bulk scheduler file, uploaded it to Hootsuite and chose the profile where I wanted to post the updates. And boom! No more having to remember to post the reminders and I can spend more time actually interacting with our followers.

Hootsuite bulk scheduler

If you’re having trouble reading the image here are the instructions in text:

Schedule multiple messages at once by using the bulk upload tool. Simply select a social profile and upload a correctly formatted .CSV file with up to 50 messages and HootSuite will deliver accordingly.

Here’s how to prepare your updates:
• – All dates/times are relative to currently selected time zone
• – URLs must contain “http://”

Example message: 16/11/2010 17:35,”Your message here”,”http://website.com”
• – Schedule messages at least 10 minutes from upload time
• – Assign times in 5 minute increments
• – Only one messages per time slot
• – Duplicate messages are not allowed

Like I said; I am definitely not an advocate for complete automation, but for mundane repetitive posts such as reminders, it automation is a great time saver.

Amazon Web Services Goes Down and Takes a Multitude of Sites With It

Amazon Webservices LogoEarly this morning Amazon Web Services started experiencing a problem in one of their data centers in Virginia. Amazon Web Services is a cloud computing service from Amazon.com. Many online platforms and services use Amazon’s service to host data for their online applications. It’s been reported that the outages were caused by a networking event. The issue is with their Elastic Block Storage or EBS. EBS is used for block level storage that is used in Amazon EC2 instances. Here’s a statement from Amazon:

“A networking event early this morning triggered a large amount of re-mirroring of EBS volumes in US-EAST-1,”

“This re-mirroring created a shortage of capacity in one of the US-EAST-1 Availability Zones, which impacted new EBS volume creation as well as the pace with which we could re-mirror and recover affected EBS volumes. Additionally, one of our internal control planes for EBS has become inundated such that it’s difficult to create new EBS volumes and EBS backed instances.”

“We are working as quickly as possible to add capacity to that one Availability Zone to speed up the re-mirroring, and working to restore the control plane issue,” Amazon continued. “We’re starting to see progress on these efforts, but are not there yet. We will continue to provide updates when we have them.”

There are a variety of services being disrupted. Here are a few where I’ve experienced outages or limited availability:

Hootsuite iPhone App Fails “Revokes” Access to Facebook and Twitter Accounts

Hootsuite recently changed their service plans and created a pro account. Since I use the application to manage client accounts. I decided to go Pro. One of the great features is the ability to sync accounts and streams with my iPhone. A couple of days ago they released a new update for their iPhone app. That’s where everything went terribly wrong. It started for me yesterday when I tried to check my Twitter account via the Hootsuite App on my iPhone.

When I started the app, as normal it started an update and attempted to refresh my streams. I soon received a message. That all accounts have been “revoked”. The App keeps crashing and is not syncing with the online version, etc. It has been over 24 hours since I realized there was a problem with mine. Other people are talking about it on Twitter, Facebook and the app store, but there doesn’t seem to be any response from Hootsuite at all.

Hootsuite, is no one monitoring any of your accounts? I understand it’s the weekend, but the lack of response is making you look really bad. Hopefully this will be resolved soon.

I’ll post updates here when I hear anything new.
