I jut read a blog post from Set Godin called “Fear of applesâ€. In his post he lists two main points that you need to overcome if you want your product or service to sell:
1. People don’t know about your product.
2. They are afraid of it.
The second really hits home when looking at the products we sell, in particular our Search Engine Optimization (SEO) services. Most have used a search engine, googled something or have heard of Google, Yahoo, Bing, or even Ask.com. Plus, they realize that if they want people to find them online, they need to be “on Google”. But, beyond that they don’t know much else. The unknown and the fact that to too many people the search engines still work on some sort of higher level “magic†that only the search engines understand, causes people to be afraid.
The best thing those of us in the SEO industry can do is educate. Educate potential clients, educate those in complimentary industries: web designers, PR pros, marketers, etc. If you want to learn about search engine optimization on your own, the link below shows you some book recommendations:
